I bought this postcard a few years back at the Antique Society in Sebastopol, California. I'm having difficulty reading the signature so that I can find the artist. If anyone can make out the name on the bottom right, I would be most grateful. Vintage Harlequin Great Dane Postcard.JPG Vintage Postcard Signature.JPG

Hello, AC. I see the first bit as Alb., maybe short for Albrecht? The last bit is this: Gezeichnet, gez., drawn by. So far not making sense of the surname.

The surname looks like "Yeull" to me. I couldn't find anything on the artist, though, using that name.

    Welcome to Antiquers! :)

    Beautiful print --

Right now the best lead I have on the name is Albert or Albrecht Kull (I'm seeing his name cited both ways online -- he probably used Albrecht, though). He did very detailed illustrations of animals in nature. He illustrated a title called Biologische Wandtafeln zur Tierkunde, in the early 20th century. His signature on illustrations I can find online looks very similar to the sig on the postcard, except that the capital K is much clearer.

I'm not sure about this right now but it seems possible.

Welcome @AustinChauncy, maybe possible to follow “Meisellbach” on the lower left. It could lead you to signature?

Meisenbach, I think, the printer. But Fig has nailed it: Albrecht Kull.

Think card was probably printed by the 'George' Meisenbach of Berlin mentioned in the British Printer. Evidently the inventor of some innovations in this kind of printing which he then licensed out.

Thank you for all of your hard work, Figtree3! Albrecht Kull is definitely the correct artist. I found something interesting regarding his personal life. Apparently, he founded the Leonberger, a German dog breed (or at least was a major contributor). I'll include the link if you'd like to take a look.

It seems fitting that an artist who was that keen on dogs would produce an illustration as nice as the one on your postcard. I'm glad Fig was able to identify the artist.

Beautiful dogs! I had seen pictures of them before but never read about them. And nice illustrations, including ine by Kull.
