Greetings! What a fantastic site you have here!

I recently became an American expat living in Geneva Switzerland. As such, we are slowly replacing our generic furniture with unique pieces from local dealers and flea markets. I bought this piece this morning at the weekly flea market and would love to know what others think of it. If I had to guess, it is from the end of the 19th or early 20th century and possibly German or Swiss German made given the K on the back. The piece is 130cm tall, 90cm wide.

    Cost? 200 francs

    Welcome to Antiquers, Dan.
We have a few Swiss here, and a few expat living in other countries, but I think you are 'our' first American expat in Switzerland.
    Lovely cabinet.

    Welcome, Dan!

Are those 2 black dots on the marble top holes? Do they also go into the wood?

There are two holes in the marble that go through the top of the cabinet. Something was mounted on top. Maybe a mirror?

That's a good question. I'm not used to seeing mirrors attached in the middle of the top (as opposed to near the back edge.) Hopefully another member will have a better idea.

Now that I'm looking at the top again - is it my imagination or is there a large area that is much cleaner than the outside edges?

So, since the lines on the sides of the cleaner spot go right through the 2 holes, there was something roughly rectangular that sat on top of the cabinet - like a hat box or a set of drawers.

Yes there is a lighter area. The top can use a deep cleaning. I need a big box of baking soda and maybe hydrogen peroxide.

May be a tad earlier than you think. Would think circa 1870s-80s Wood is burl walnut.
