Featured Glass Bottle - Owens Bottle Company machine???-

Hi!

I found 4 glass bottles at an estate sale. They would seem to be made in a Owens Bottle Company machine (based on the suction mark) but the mark is not right: it has a narrow diamond (not a square) and the mark inside the diamond seems more of small square than a “O”.

A few additional notes:
- the bottles are all basically the same but vary slightly in color and thinkness (the manufacturing process was not perfected like on a modern bottle)

- the base of the bottle is uneven thickness

- the glass stoppers are “broken off” / roughly finished on the bottom

- there are many bubbles of varying size

I don’t expect these to have any real value but I’m having fun researching! Please share your knowledge, I want to learn more.

Had to tell for sure when the glass is not in hand, but the style, color and crisp "feel" to the design edges make me think these are not antique bottles, but rather that these were made to be decorative bottles.

Do these seem to have an exceptional weight to them (without the stopper)?

Owens bottle machines frequently left a circular mark on the bottom of the bottle, as on this canning jar. I think the size of the ring can vary, but it's a common occurrence. I think it had to do with ejecting the glass from the mold.

 

I would say it’s definitely heavier than an empty modern bottle would be. I’m not a bottle collector so I don’t have a good idea of what “exceptional weight” would be

The glass stoppers seem to have a ground shank.

Again, not expecting these to be particularly old or valuable - just enjoying learning.

Your bottle neck seems to have been angularly molded to accommodate the matching stopper which appears to be graduated. Is this the case? I don't see a ground shank, but the photo is still rather dark on my screen, most older bottles seem to have straight necks and often corks were used as stoppers.

I looked up "diamond" on this website, but I cannot tell what the mark inside of the mark is!

Do the sides seams go up thru the top?

Yes, they do.

 

FWIW, I seem to remember reading that if the seams go thru the top, the bottle may be old buy not antique. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I have read it seems like it indicates they are machine made. That could be early 1900s. So they are not “antique” in the sense that they have any real value but they kept me entertained on a day I wasn’t feeling well.
