Hi, search for "GLORIA EXERCITUS" for more info, this is a 4th c Follis. Not sure of which emperor without seeing the other side.

One note of caution: there's a lot of repros of these out there. Worth a quid, tho'.

I always envy Britons that they do now & then unearth what the Romans left behind. Would think the odds of a coin like this - unless the back is blank - being genuine are better than they would be in the US.

Yes and no. One of our newspapers, for example, gave away replicas and you can buy them in souvenir shops!

There's an awful lot of Roman stuff out there. I bought glass the other week and I dig tile up in my garden.

We take it for granted, sorry. ;) I used to walk past the Roman Wall on my way to work every day. I'd reach out and touch it. I swear the thing talked to me. There's a local church, which is more recent: it's about 12th or 13th century. But bits of its walls include Roman worked stone.

I think people felt that way when I lived in Albany NY. People up there thought less than nothing about victorian houses or antiques, theyve been settled there so long old stuff is everywhere. . There was a convenience store in a 1780s church ! Coming from florida,I was blown away by it all yet the locals were like "Meh" !

A Yank's notion of 'old' is pathetic to a Brit, or a European, not to mention a Chinese.

As a wee lad, about 14, I visited, from England, relatives in rural NJ. They took me to lots of sights and sites, but I had to be polite about the 'old' places, my house (parents house) was built around 1700, there was a castle knocked about a bit in the English Civil War just down the road and old was just normal to me.

The modern things and the strange American things like blueberry pie, ice cream sodas, the strange money and the Navy Day air show at Lakehurst were much bigger hits.

Traffic circles (roundabouts) were a novelty here a while back. Some people loving them, others, who kept going round & round, not so much. One English visitor said to me, Everything's so big. Even the apples are big. (We were standing next to an outdoor produce display.)

What I want to know is, when I watch programs made by the BBC and there is a street scene, I'm always struck by how immaculate the street is, as though it had been scrubbed. Does it really look like that?

Or the Middle East! Coming from Boston I thought we had nice historic buildings but I visit family there yearly and a late 1700s house is hardly historic :)

I also thought of Syria, Iran, the whole Mediterranean, Rome, Greece. Thought a few representative places would make the point. Africa has less only because a lot of the material didn't survive well. In the US, we have an abundance of fossils in places, including New Jersey.

It's even worse on the west coast of the US. "Old" here is anything before 1950 lol!

Funny Sparky. The first time I was in CA was the summer I got my drivers license, before you were born. Some of my teen friends and I drove there from Alabama. We saw they were building Disney World and stayed at del Coronado before it was fashionable. There were no interstates and except for the Spanish influence looked like much of the US. We stopped and gambled in Vegas on the way. BTW, we drove much of Route 66 to get there.
Question: Would you allow your teens daughters drive across the country today by themselves?

how immaculate the street is, as though it had been scrubbed.

Regular rain plus street sweeping machines help. It is a different picturer after some public event, the British can be as messy as anyone.
