Well correct me if I am mistaken, but if Louchets piece is circa 1920 and Clement Massier’s lived 1845-1917, stands to reason Louchet waited till his arch rival departed before knocking off one of the greatest works of Mr. C. Massiers life time.

There’s no snail, just the shells.

 

First is another of those religious parables & both are too new to have influenced all this pottery, a match striker & a hood ornament.

 

And no operculum. Maybe the snail has just pulled way, way back in.

 

I know. The frog is hauling the snail to the kitchen, hoping the chef will serve escargot instead of cuisse de grenouille.

 

It's a very simple explanation I've found, in France, eating cuisses de grenouilles aux escargots as a traditionnal receipe in Région des Dombes near Lyon.

 

I was thinking along those lines. But to make it into a car mascot? Then again, maybe for a chef...
