Wonder if any of them were among the items they got in trouble for because they were imported with fraudulent paperwork.

I don't think it has to do with religion but it's simply proper scientific proceeding. if it's one of these scrolls or a painting or a handhammered arts & crafts copper item said to be B.G.H. doesn't matter.
if we weren't constantly questioning the "facts", we were still believing the earth is "a saucerful of secrets" and the Pope and the Comniss Party of China were always right.

The Turin shroud has been examined many times over the centuries. The first time was in the 14th century, when it was already proven to be a fake. The last time was in 1988, radiocarbon dating, when it was proven to be a Medieval fake.
Both examinations were instigated by the RC church, as I am sure most, if not all, others were.
People who adhere to popular religion need symbols, and the city of Turin needs money. I guess it is a win-win situation.
