Cling cling -----> glass or stone,
clank clank---> synthetic

There is a first time for everything.

 

Test the piece with the tooth tap using a known piece of plastic and a known piece of glass so you can compare. It really is a good test.

However, I always wait until I get the item back home and can wash it first. At sales I have found tapping my wedding ring on an item helps me tell if a piece is stone/glass or plastic. Try doing that, again with known pieces of glass and plastic for comparison, you should be able to hear the difference

Thanks Marie. I'll certainly try that in the morning. It is evening here, and all I hear at the moment is my brain rattling.

Yup, plastic yields a thud-ish sound and glass a clink-ish one.

 

It is now.

 

I'll do the test tomorrow and get back to you all about it. Right now it is either rattling inside my head, or thuds outside it.

 

I used to hear my brain rattling, These days, it just seems to sit low down in my skull, like it's tired and resting.
