Featured Flatware Chest/collector cabinet?

anyone know what it's for ?

 

Do the insides of any of the drawers have dividers or other separations?

 

A very significant chest of sterling flatware??????????? LOVE the chest, regardless!!!!!!! Would someone say that's English??

 

Did anyone say the chest was chock full of flatware?

I love that the drawers are graduating. What do the locking mechanisms look like?

 

My first thought is music cabinet, although the drawers seem a little deep. All those locks do suggest valuables like the family plate.

 

Oh, I like it whatever it's for. But, I have seen (only once) a silverware chest this large. It held service for a lot of people plus serving pieces of Christofle Silver. The auctioneer said it was Sterling. It went for $12,000. Ahh! That was a great auction!

 

I wondered if there is a hidden compartment!

 

I have an old dresser with knobs like that. I hope someone weighs in with a time frame.

Would need more pics to better evaluate. That said, my gut says mid to late 19th century. Flatware chest is my best guess for use.

I love it! I want a silver chest so bad. I don’t have the space for a piece of furniture just for my flatware though. I’d also be scared to leave that much in a wooden piece of furniture that could be moved or broken into relatively easily. One day though! This one is nice and masculine. I haven’t seen a lot of silver chests but the ones I have seen were of a slightly more feminine shape. Looks like it would also make a nice flat file for smaller pieces or just every day storage.
