Bought this vase today for a 50$ gamble. The story is that it was made by a well know artist and was on display at a museum. Its not signed anywhere that i can see. Was hoping somebody would recognize this style of pottery.

Well I would bet it is Japanese and the raised 3D decoration is called moriage.

@LauraGarnet02 Is spot on. Japanese and early 20th century. Very unlikely to be by a noted artist nor exhibited in a museum, it is typical of factory produced items when the Japanese economy was in trouble in the inter-war period.

It's a nice solid decorator item and best guess would go here for about what you paid. My first impulse was Japanese too. I like the colors in the raised bits.

Oh don't worry, just chalk it up to a learning experience. All of us have made our own mistakes paying too much for something that turned out not to be worth it. Or on the other hand, leaving something behind for a reasonable price that turned out to be something that would pay the rent for a year!

I personally like that green spider web design. I don't know if that's what it's supposed to be in Japanese symbolism, but that is how I perceive it.

I had an enormous one of these (about 40" tall) a few months ago. It sold at auction locally for £20. The buyer has it on Facebook now for £95 but he or she has not sold it and I don't think they will.

Just to add on the end, these moriage pieces come in very different qualities, just like most other things. Here's a quick snap of a pair I have, these are also slip decorated, they are in Kyoto clay, and I'd class them technically as Satsuma.
