Hello Again! Sorry to keep posting my mysteries…it seems my family thought they were would live forever and never thought to write anything down about things they had “tucked-away”….a valuable lesson I’m taking to heart. …Anyhow…this is about 16”x12”. The colors are much more vivid on the back so it’s seen some fading…the “canvas” seems somehow less fine or less refined. As usual, I did some searching but didn’t see anything very much like it. I’m curious if it’s possibly been damaged or had some environmental conditions other than UV that have “softened” it’s appearance.
I thought all the lines were cracks in the paint at first, but obviously not Kinda looks like Unfinished areas But then wouldn't be signed if unfinished Really interesting, I like it
Kind of what I'm doing now!! If I get something figured out or appraised, I'm writing it down and putting it with the item!!! For those who have to deal with it down the road!!!!!!!! Just sayin'!
I love it. Very interesting. Looks like a topographic map. Wish I could take a magnifying glass to it. Seems there would be words in small print on it. I am familiar with Grumbacher because they sold paints. He was in NY City. Artist supplies came out of there. I had fun with it for a while. I hope you find out who did this painting and have it dated. I will also do a search. If I find anything I will contact you.
It's a common Asiatic theme: a mountainous landscape wreathed in clouds and fog. Not a great painting, but decorative. The lines are strange to my eye. I wonder if the intent was to make it look like batik, but I'm not even sure if that's a reasonable notion. Since it's on an American canvas, I'm guessing a Chinese-American artist. The staples suggest it's not terribly old.
@Shwikman, when I blew up your image on the website, I thought it kind of looked like there could be a signature in/near the bottom right corner hiding by that black framing.....I could also be all wrong, UNLESS OF COURSE, what's printed on the left in Chinese (?) IS the signature??? Is it still in the frame or have you taken it out??
Beautiful composition, 1/3 1/3 1/3. Seems older and was reframed 70's-80's. Love it a lot. Will ask my wife if she can translate sig, tomorrow when she wakes, if no one can before then.
We’ll, as the picture is falling out of the frame pretty much I checked it out and there’s definitely not a signature there.
Signature translates 沈 勤 Shen Qin https://www.invaluable.com/artist/shen-qin-jp7ypi467c/sold-at-auction-prices/ keep it , but the value is in chinese collectors. i accept finder fees
Super cool! Thank You!! By chance was there any info on the other characters that were on the back edge of the canvas(a couple pictures down)?
Oooops! didn't ask but will when she gets up tomorrow. she just happened to get up a little bit ago and back to sleep. but I believe they are just the framer info.
