Carved MOP

    D985484C-151D-475D-BC8A-7E757E2668C2.jpeg F3425274-AA71-412B-B94B-96BF4378565E.jpeg Saw this carved mop pendant somewhere and thought it was kind of interesting. It looks kind of NW coast NA ish and kind of Easter Island ish. Any ideas? Pretty large based on hand it’s in. No other info to go on. Edit: also occurred to me it could be a different shell material. Possibly polished abalone or something else iridescent.

    Mother of pearl, also known as nacre, is made by many mollusks, not all of them with shells thick enough to be good for carving. The lining of an abalone shell is as much MOP as is the lining of an oyster shell. And mollusks other than oysters can form pearls.
