Thank you for taking time to read my post. This is a hand-made beaded purse made in France with a beautiful beaded pattern. The label is shown in last photo "Made in France" "Hand-Made." I do not know anything about it. Any info is appreciated. Do people collect these? IMG_20210818_161351.jpg IMG_20210818_161403.jpg IMG_20210818_161416.jpg IMG_20210818_161516.jpg

    I do indeed!

That's a very nice one. I'd think 20s or maybe 30s, glass seed beads. Moire silk lined by the look of it and in very decent condition.

Thank you for your informative post. I was trying--unsuccessfully-- to figure out if the beads were glass seed beads, and the years it was made ---so this is very helpful information.

These purses--although quite beautiful and hand made--so it surprised me that I saw many on ebay and etsy that only cost $30-$40. The other thing that surprised me was how delicate and fragile the purse is: I can't imagine someone actually carrying this one out and about.

If anyone is interested, while researching this purse, I found this webpage on the history of beaded purses which is also pinned at the top of the forum: "https://www.lchshistory.org/beaded-purses-through-the-decades"

These were party and going out bags, kept for best. Yes, it's surprising how little you can get them for. I love the things and have used them. Way nicer than modern evening bags.

Exactly. Worn infrequently and carefully stored between times.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look closely at the bag to detect bead loss. I thought this bag was so pretty ...but there seems to major bead loss in several places :banghead:....Not knowing anything about these bags, I did not even notice this:

I guess the main question would be--do buyers of these bags expect significant bead loss given their age or does this make it basically worth $10?

The photos below show where I think there may be major bead loss YIKES there is a lot!! :banghead: Does the photo with the circles show the spot where you noticed bead loss around the snap closure? Thank you.

I'm no expert in these bags........but to my eye....I can not understand the virtual lack of quality that so many beads can produce......

maybe I just don't understand the design.....or these were made for cheap...

There can be interest in less than perfect bags if they're unusual examples of their type or because some buyers reuse beads for other antique/vintage bags in need of repair. If you haven't done so already, I suggest that you browse listings on eBay, both completed and current, to see where collector interest lies.

The bead loss wouldn't worry me over much on something that age. It's still a nice useable thing.

These certainly weren't cheap, the hand beading is a heck of a skill.

I worry more about stabilizing what's still there.
I have had one or two where I put it in a plastic bag to prevent losing more beads if they fall off, and sell it as is at my store.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify where you see the major bead loss. I did not notice it along the rim until you pointed it out.

It is just so the beads that fall off are kept with the bag. It doesn't preserve the bag, since the fabric can't breathe. Preservation is not a problem for you as a seller to worry about though.:)

I misinterpreted that post :banghead:so thank you for clarifying this-- and pointing out that putting them in a plastic bag would mean the fabric can't breathe so this is Not a good idea for storage/preservation.

It is perfect for making sure you have all the beads with the bag. Not so much if you are talking preservation, but most people don't worry much about preservation of fabrics that aren't antique. They generally just store them, put them on display, or use them.:)
