I have never seen a pin cushion like this. Your very own little sewing center! This stands 6 3/4" tall. the base measures 3 3/4" x 4 1/8". Has a small drawer for needles, this measures 3 1/4" x 2 3/4" and is 3/4" deep. Has a pin cushion and a hole to hold a thimble. Also a little wooden spear to hold a spool of thread. The top does have some damage. Would this be late 1800's or slightly earlier?

I'd imagine Eastlake era. About 1870-1890

Charming! Although it isn't chip-carved, I would classify this in the folk, tramp art style, with a Black Forest influence. Yes, it's oak. It looks home-made to me. C. 1870-1899 would be my best guess.

I would guess it's hobby stuff. Thousands of patterns were published for fret saw projects. Before television, people had time on their hands.

That looks like a mighty big hole to hold the average thimble.

The thread is not regular sewing thread...........

    What does its label say?

    Thanks Darkwing and Moreother.

Judy, maybe the hole just looks big in the picture.

I wondered if it was just the photo.

The thread label really doesn't add anything.............sorry.:(

Someone used a blade to enlarge a round hole to fit the rectangle sword into it.

Nice. First impression is "tramp art". My inclination would be to alter the top cross piece and make it pleasing to the eye. Easily done. It's already compromised so I would make the best of it. If you are selling it I would include a note detailing your repair with date of repair.
