Hello! Anyone knows the origin of the mark on this cup? Maybe it's japanese. Do you think it's antique?
    Thank you for the help!

    Hi Dafne!

    Welcome to Antiquers............:cat:

If you can still Edit your post, go back and choose Full Image for your photos...........easier for all to see. Most everyone new chooses Thumbnail, so you are not alone............

Help will be forthcoming from others...........

    Hi Dafne!

    I will try.

Use your Edit button below your original post (if it's still there).

If you can, you will have options for your photos. Thumbnail or Full Image. Others may be more explicit.

Not to worry.......you can always post new ones........and many members here know how to do it for you.

    :)

The top line of the mark says 'Great Japan', if you can post an in focus pic I might be able to tell you what is says at the bottom too. Probably 1920's period from the mark/style.

The words "others may be more explicit" refers to other members, not choices...........duh on me!

The kanji below say 'Abe' a surname pronounced arrbay (same as former Japanese primeminister).

I have found a couple of other pieces with the same marking, dates match for the inter-war period, can't find anything about the maker though - many records of Japanese businesses were lost in the war.

I don't have this mark in my database currently, are you ok if I use the pic to add it in?

Edit - forgot to say in case you didn't know already, it is called Satsuma pottery and your piece has moriage detail (piped clay), this type of ware was made for export to the West and popular from the mid 19th century until WW2.

So I had a similarly marked piece and my notes : The kanji character inside the fan is Izumi - (Nippon) = Japan. Date: likely around 1900.

You may need to update your notes, Izumi is 泉 and means spring or fountain (can also be a name). The Kanji across the top say Dai Nihon (Great Japan). The fan is likely a logo, if the mark in the circle was a character it would be katakana for 'i'.

I definitely stand corrected! I just went back to the mark inside the fan and it is different then the one here. Mine was Hihon at least I think that is what I am reading in my scribble? Something I had copied a few years ago from Gotheberg I suspect.

@laura9797 no worries, here to help and you can always post the item if you want me to have a look. I suspect you mean Nihon (Japan), (not Hihon), hihon means 'secret book' which would be rather fabulous as a mark though!

    @Dafne Many thanks.
