So I purchased this large (nearly 20 tall) figural group with hunting dogs and stag. The tag said it was ceramic. There is a partial label on the bottom that all I can see is "raes, suc. a nova". Do you have any ideas? As always, thanks

Nova is new in Portuguese. Suc. is an abbreviation for surcusal or branch. Again in Portuguese.

The most likely town or city ending with raes is Guimarães.

Found it! The company's name is A Nova Decorativa (The New Decoration.) The address is Rua João Cabreira, 51 in Coimbra, Portugal. M.R.F. Guimarães is the owner. Here's blog where the company is mentioned. (In Portuguese. You can run it through Google Translate, if you wish.) The blogger writes that little is known about the company. And according to the blog, later labels would carry the name of Manuel Guimãres.

I don't think terribly old. To my eye, label looks 1970s/1980s-ish.

That would be cool but alas there is no other hole in it except for the underside of the base.

That's strange. I wonder what the purpose would be for the hole on the bottom then? Maybe another member knows of one.

I've relooked at that label and given it's design and the palette of your piece, think 1960s more likely.

Where is the bottom hole in relation to the stag's open mouth? Perhaps a brass rod went through it with a socket?

So there are these 2 holes in the bottom of the base. One would have been covered by the original label so maybe they are there for the manufacturing process or cooling.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

For what it's worth, there IS some writing along the edge on the underside........... even if not too clear.....

Succ. stands most probably for sucessor.
