Featured What to name the amber baby, and amber??? beads

The long graduated strand turned up in a local antique/jewelry/junque place for $5. The catch was it was resting in pieces. I sat there in front of the TV for two nights putting the band back together. But... what does one call this sort of amber?

The other strand of unused beads came from a yard sale. Some have imperfections like real amber, but it looks like insects have partially eaten an outer coating on some of them. Not sure what they really are. The outer layer isn't paint.

Natural raw amber, or raw natural amber, take your pick. Lovely necklace, full of character.

Do they float in salt water, and do they fluoresce?

 

Haven't had time to mess with them yet. I list stuff on Facebook in a private group, so if FB is still down tonight I may try messing with them then.

 

250ml water and 1 TB (15ml or therebouts) salt. They floated.

I'm still not sure what sort of amber they are (pressed, composite etc) but they float!

 

They would be pressed, not composite. Pressed doesn't sound good, but it is perfectly OK in amber terms.

 

Bedarned - now to string them. I know a local dealer who loves getting hold of amber (think Iris Apfel loves amber, but this is a guy) but hates stringing stuff or even the thought of it.

 

I think an oil rub would make them look a lot better.

 

Certainly worth a try. I think they were in somebody's attic.
