    Hello my people!
I just bought a house in Virginia, so I am moving across the country this winter. Down-sizing just shifted from leisurely to panic mode. Thus, ensuing random object enquiries for a while. I beg your patience. This one- 12.5" H Czech glass vase, 5.25" dia. at mouth. I know next to nothing about Czech glass save it is often orange, so.. does anyone know who signed it on the bottom? I am reading "Czechoslovakia" on the bottom line. The bird and floral are done in silvering which has darkened nicely. Thank you!! cz4.jpg cz1.jpg

You're reading a top line which says Czecho and the line below is Slovakia. Very common split in the early 20th. Get a Sunshine cloth on that silver.

What Bear said. They split the country name for a while, mostly because otherwise it wouldn't fit!

Ah, thanks! I've lived there before, when I was studying at the Smith, and loved it! Except for the traffic!

There were many between the wars makers doing this kind of thing. That orange is often Welz.

Yes. Up until this year, the Smithsonian Associates partnered with the Corcoran School in NYC for a masters in American decorative arts. I was privileged to attend, as their token Goth. ;)

Thank you! Another rabbit hole to get lost in, as I procrastinate...

So northern VA it sounds like. I moved far enough out to avoid much of the traffic but close enough to be in DC in an hour (unless it's rush hour).

    Welcome back!

Thank you! We were in an old Victorian in Manassas before, right next to the old Manassas Junction railway. The Confederates built it, then burned it to the ground twice, so teh Yanks wouldn't seize it. We had Civil War redoubts in our back yard! I LOVE all the history back there waiting to be discovered. The first house we lost out on was in Natural Bridge, a 1700s James River landing station. I think I posted the link earlier. Thomas Jefferson slept there often. I was going to open archeo field schools on the property, but alas.
