    I'd say those are pomegranates.

I think you need someone who has hands-on experience and can do a hands-on examination to tell you what you've got. You took a risk. So long as you are satisfied with the integrity of the seller, that might be all you ever get. There are people who have astonishing knowledge of art and artists, but I don't know how to track down a specialist to help with this. I hope it works out for you.

Could be peaches, with that 'seam' on them. Many fruits had different shapes in the past, so peaches could have been more ovoid

    Pomegranates have that distinctive crown

I think I'm seeing that crown, or what's left of it, on the forward piece.

Anybody else notice how dark the left arm is. Doesn’t make sense for light and shadow. Maybe wasn’t cleaned?

Especially since the left arm itself has shading, behind the pole and on the back of the hand. Maybe it was been done to give a sense of perspective?

You did well, and it is a good painting. I'm sure you will enjoy it, even if you may never find out more about it. Sometimes a bit of mystery adds to the attraction.;)

I hope you do find out more about the painting, there must be experts who can give an opinion, in auction houses or museums. I agree that the fruit looks like peaches, and that it must have formed part of a larger painting or triptych, with probably the peaches being offered to the Madonna and child, since they symbolise purity and honour in Renaissance art. (Not an offering to a rich truffle lover after all!). I hope it becomes part of your home and life. I do have one niggling worry, in that a painting of quality without an artist or a provenance, being located in Germany in 1954 . . . So many looted paintings are still missing after the war. I hope you find the artist, even if it's only "from the workshop of . . ." Please report back when you know more, I would love to know more about it.
