I found this old English(?) plate that appears to be old, yet doesn’t have a marking on it. I actually have quite a few porcelain items so this is the first.

Any info on it would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hi,it doesn't seem to be porcelain. I also do not think that it is English, I would search towards Iran or maybe Turkey...

    Hi Mat!

Thank you for the reply. I will do that! But it does appear to be porcelain (it’s ceramic and glazed), unless I’m not privy to some other type of ceramic that can closely resemble porcelain. Truly appreciate your input!

The chips show that it is not porcelain.

Would you be able to elaborate? What type of material would it be based on what you see? Thank you!

    It's just called pottery.

It's earthenware with a tin-glaze rather than porcelain.

It's earthenware, based on the orange color under the glaze. Porcelain would be white.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were Spanish.

    Hi Debora!

Thank you for the insight. I will definitely look into it. It’s significantly old and appears it may have a Persian design, as indicated by Mat, and appears to be earthenware as stated, but the possibility of it being Spanish is novel, so I am excited to see!

Tin glazed terracotta. Made in many countries including Spain, the Netherlands and yes, the UK.

I agree. I seem to remember this Middle Eastern inspired design first appeared in Italy, then the Netherlands, and from there it spread to the rest of Europe. Italy has always had strong links with both North Africa and the Middle East.

Since this design often had pomegranates instead of flowers, I would guess this is from a country where pomegranates weren't known, so northern Europe.
A Dutch plate of this type is likely to have an orange/ochre rim.

Porcelain is white and at least slightly translucent when held up to a bright light.
