I bought this plate today. I don't know much about it but i realize it's satsuma, Japanese.
I have a lot of oriental pottery but this plate is something else. The plate is very heavy. The material must be stoneware. When I read about about satsuma and stoneware it might be old? It's feels old. Can anybody help me?

 

I am not an oriental expert, but we do have some members who are, and they are active, I'm sure they will love to see your lovely piece!

What does the baby symbolize? ( to the left)

 

I'm sorry, but I do not see a "baby" on the left in your closeup. In the full view I do see a young person (at least a shorter person and possibly a servant) to the right of the central figures. Where is the baby?

Ah, I see. A little "sort of face" without a body. Sorry, I have no clue whether that is anything meaningful or just random lines and dots.

 

Yes a little face Im just wondering if the face have a meaning.. Like the Chinese pottery. Decor thats symbolize..

Without a mark on the bottom, best I can do is say that I agree that it looks to be in a satsuma style, but more than that I cannot do.

 

Very nice dish.

The top looks like typical satsuma ware decoration, but the bottom looks so different (in my limited knowledge). Satsuma that I have seen has a creamy, slightly yellowish appearance while yours looks more like stoneware or something made to resemble stone.

I hope someone can provide you with more information. I'll be interested to hear what others may have to say about it.

 

Yes, exactly what I think. I am not a big fan of the later satsuma pottery, but this is something else. It's like substantial stoneware.

 

Just wanted to add that I personally don't think it's made of any stone, but more like ceramic made to look like stone (a bit).

 

Hi, the style of this plate is typical for late Meiji - Taisho period IMO and likely made in Kyoto -Awata. To me it looks like a normal Satsuma dish that is either very dirty or has been soaked with someting accidentally and got "stained" that way. The face may just have been another child figure which was abandoned by the painter, I do not think there is a special meaning

 

Thanks for answer. I just got confused because of the weight. I have other dishes in bigger size and this dish is twice heavier.

Also it’s a little damage. The inside-material looks like stone.
