A signed oval plaque of Napoleon. Unfortunately it has been heavily polished and lost some detail. But I believe it is by David D’Angers. The signature itself is also faint (but the surname is luckily clearer and the first name looks like it could be David) I tried to show this in the photos. It is 14cm wide and 17cm in ‘height’. Any thoughts or comments on the age and signature? Thanks and keep well

The Met has a number of portrait medallions by David D'angers. I did not attempt to look at them all; however the 4 I checked out are simply signed 'David' in the field to the right of the head, not on the truncation & not using 'D'angers'.

The 'signature' on this one is different from yours:

Tried to bring yours up, without much success:

Much appreciated. Thanks for the comments. I also came to the same findings. But I do think the surname is correct and the plaque looks quite old. I e-mailed the David D’Angers museum/gallery and hopefully I will get a response.

    JMHO.
    doubtful.
I trust the Bibliothèque Nationale de France more than some guy on the proantique platform that is exclusively open for professional sellers.
they say that d'Anger made one of Napoleon in 1838.

when you compare the quality of the carving...pffff...
furthermore his real name was Pierre Jean David, Angers being his birthplace. so open for any possible name and fake.

Don’t really fully understand your complete comment. Yes,he adopted the name David D’ angers. There are several examples of the plaque (Napoleon in uniform with the cocked hat) noted in museum collections and such. Sure anything can be faked or copied (if that is your main point?) Yes the back of the plaque looks rough.
Anyway it is a interesting and very cool thing.I will let you know if I get any response from the official museum in France..

Agreed. Goes without saying. Or any established and accredited museum for that matter.
