Could this be a forged piece and wondering what it is?

It looks nice, but you don't give a size or tell us anything about it! What do you think it might be made of? Metal? Ceramic?? Something else?? AND WELCOME to the site @kiaweso !!

Title says brass, implying metal. But I would call it a "brass bowl with lid." ;)

Thank you for your response. I don't know anything about it. I purchased at Goodwill. I thought it was interesting. It appears to be Brass and it's heavy and measures 6 inches. i've been researching. Thanks again!

Looks like only the top is mounted on the lid and the rest parts are made in one piece. Very nice quality and craftsmanship
    I like it!

    Welcome @kiaweso , nice box.
The style is 'Indo-Persian' (not the period!). It was probably handmade in Kashmir, northwestern India.

The bowl part has a similar shape to many temple bowls, but temple bowls don't have a lid. They are used for offerings which the deities can see, hence a wide, unlidded bowl. Like this one, which holds a common offering of flower petals:

Temple bowls are used in Hinduism and Buddhism.
Kashmir is mostly Muslim, and kiaweso's lidded bowl would probably have been made to use in an Islamic household.

Thank you all for your input. Inside the lid is either a number and/or an unidentified mark. Providing a photo. Regards

It looks like Arabic script. Koshur, the main Kashmiri language, is often written in Perso-Arabic script, especially by the majority Muslim population.

Perso-Arabic script is basically Arabic script with some extra letters added to accomodate sounds of the Persian and Indo-Persian languages.
