Need help identifying, possible Songye?

Discussion in 'Tribal Art' started by LittleLACollector, Feb 18, 2022.

  1. Hello, Maybe he should have something balanced on his head? The horn looking parts make a flat surface to balance something on. Any help is appreciated, age, region, name of the style/piece? There are no apparent markings. africanIMG_5568.jpg

I can see why you thought he might be Songye, with the beard, the squarish shoulders, and the pot belly. But there are significant departures from the typical Songye style of power/ancestor figures. The extreme deformation of the head and spine on yours is not typical, nor is the addition of a walking stick and carved clothing. Songye figures more often have both hands resting on their belly, and clothing, if present, is made with added materials such as bark or cloth.

I do not recognize your piece as a traditional style from Africa (or anywhere else). But there is the possibility that he is from the Congo region, carved for sale.
