Full disclosure: I'm not a horse person, even a little. Kids & Grandkids are, and some friends, too...but the creatures don't like me...never have...lay their ears back as I approach...most won't take a carrot from me. I have long ago accepted their near-universal judgement, and am not in the least offended.

But...I still find some of them to be magnificent and profoundly intelligent, fascinating, noble animals.

This one is ~4ΒΌ inches high (base included), to the left ear, ~4 inches long, right fore-hoof to tip of tail. The base is ~2β…› inches square & ~β…œ inches thick. It weighs 101 grams, and is carved from a single piece of unknown wood. Its upper surfaces are darkened with age; the only damage is a flea-bite chip at the tip of the right ear.

I included Mongol in the title due to my perception of it being 'short-coupled', as theirs are...and the manner of saddle fixed, with stirrups subtly deemphasized; a guess is that they're primarily used to mount & dismount. All the other accoutrements may or may not be associated with Mongol ponies...I am admittedly without clue.

This little treasure was left late on the second day of an estate sale...~20years ago. It wasn't very costly...I'm thrilled to have it.

What do you think of it...and of my attribution of its essence to the Mongols?

    Thanks for lookin'!

    "To me, it's modern looking."

All of the 'Tang Dynast Iron Horses" are...wait for it...IRON!

I don't believe these modern secondary castings are at all comparable with my wooden carving, except for subject.

I'm aware I've got plenty to learn, but...

For its size it is incredibly detailed. It would look nice on a shelf of mine too.

Tang dynasty horses have been copied in many materials. They are hugely popular, and understandably so.
I would guess yours is mid-20th century. Those inlaid eyes were still used ca 1970, maybe later too, but I stopped looking around that time.;)

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

One of the first paintings I did when I started colored pencil class was a Tang Dynasty horse - image from a postcard from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Not my best effort, but just learning the medium. chinese horse (2).jpg
