Is this a communion paten or am I totally off?

Hi, I cannot find anything similar other than communion patens, but none of those I came across have legs and are not bowl shaped. I am guessing it is brass and looks to possibly have a light lacquer on it and also has a hammered metal look. It seems to be well constructed with very nice wood for the handle and and is very heavy for its size (14oz). The metal area is 5" by 4 3/4" and it is about 9 1/4" from the end of the handle to the far edge. There are no markings on it. Thanks in advance for any ideas or help.

Like you, I searched through communion patens and found none with feet. Nevertheless, I think you're on the right track. JMHO.

 

I'm wondering if there are other pieces that go with it? Some sort of serving set. But it's just to close to a paten to get away from that too far.

 

It doesn't have the marks I'd think a paten would. It could be an ashtray; I've found some made this way.

 

The design of the handle attachment is shaped like a cross, so it's possibly a religious object. I don't see any patens with that type of foot, but some of them do have raised bases. It's still worth considering that it might be a paten. I see that many patens are gold plated. Something to also check on yours, even though there are no marks.

 

Thanks, I looked into ashtray a little and did find some similar but they all have a notch or rest for a cigarette. Yes, I also see the cross as a club or maybe a shamrock. I just get a religious feel. I have several unmarked pieces of what I think is sterling and there is a grouchy old metal dealer with a scanning metal analyzer so I may suck it up and visit him. He is insufferable, but does know his stuff in many areas, and with the nice quality of this it may very well be gold plated.
