Friends, I had a great booty yesterday.

As always though am lost...is this a belt? It's HUGE,
four inches wide ( 10 cms) and 30 inches long. ( 72 cms).

The smaller one is two inches ( 5 cms) wide and 35 inches long. ( 88 cms)
The small one doesn't have a do er upper.

Are they maybe military? Or luggage straps? The buckle actually looks like, and works the same as, a buckle. The two ends slide together.

    I also got this box.
It seems to have had water droplets on it at some time.
Is there any way I could perhaps get them out?

It's 8 inches across (20 cms) and one and a half down (4cms)

I got this from the same seller as the belts/non belts above

The design looks as if it means...something?

Could be fraternal stuff. Is the belt long enough to be a sash?

Thank you for your reply xxx

I think it's too short to be a sash, but am not hot on measurements. ( I had a look to see if there were common sizes, and I still think these are too short )

I don't think we have fraternities here, I am pretty sure ( but am always ready to be proven wrong about anything ) but that is an avenue I didn't even think of,there must be something similar here xx
    Thank you, MOS xxx

The belt colours do not match any British or Commonwealth medal ribbons or regimental colours.
To me it looks like a Drum Strap or for another other instrument.

On the box you could use very fine wire wool and methylated spirit to clean the surface then beeswax it.

Once you've given that box some tlc, it will be a real beauty. I love boxes.
It is a North American thing, not European.

Thank you my lovely! I too have a THING for boxes. I usually come home from booties with at least one ( usually three) boxes and stuffs with which to fill them!

Didn't think we had fraternities, thought there may be some sort of equivalent but doesn't appear so! xx

    Thank you again xxx

Fraternal organizations are found everywhere. In addition to college groups, they include the Ancient Order of Druids, Freemasons, B'nai Brith, Rotary International, etc.

I didn't even think of that sort of fraternity. I have a tonne of Freemason stuff, I find it everywhere. It's the only one I have any chance of recognising, so I've probably walked past other fraternal things many times without having any clue xx

Neither did I, the people from across the pond usually mean college fraternities etc. We don't have that.
Freemasonry and Rotary came to us from the English speaking world, but it is not a traditional Dutch thing either. Historically we only have a few religious fraternities, subject to church law, but that is different again.

I didn't even think of it not being a college-type thing, I don't know why or how the other types didn't occur to me at all!
I love all the Mason stuff, I have an entire suit or whatever it's called, a big black thing with black crepe rosettes on,and the person whose suit it was ... I have all their books and things! I bought it last year from a booty from the persons grandson. I think it's from 1920 ish, have stashed it somewhere.
Druids didn't occur to me, either. My dad claims to have Druidic tendencies ie he used to sit under oaks when he was tired and lo & behold! he became not tired. I think it was because he'd rested but he claims it's because he has Druidic blood :)

Of course it was because of his Druidic blood!

Well, I wouldn't mind a bit of the ole Druidic blood flooding through my particular veins so I am quite prepared to believe him :)

I think most Western Europeans have Druidic blood. It is part of our past.

The straps reminded me of a folding chair from the '70's. I cannot find a picture of such a chair, but this is a more modern version:

Thank you, it could be, it feels like straps. Seems older than that to me, in the hand but the 70s were longer ago than I like to remember :O so there is that
    Thank you xxx
