This lil weapon came in a group of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) items I bought at auction. I thought it was really interesting and might not have bought the lot were it not present. Not sure if it’s GAR related or not? I can’t tell if the enamel monogram is an artistic rendering of GAR? The middle letter seems to be an ‘A’ but before that looks like an Anchor and after it idk. Final photo shows an example in the middle of a GAR emblem it could be. It seems to be silver but isn’t marked that I can tell. It’s really nicely made for such a dainty thing. Any opinions on it? Could have gone in the hands of a little figure/statue maybe? Could have been attached to a ribbon or piece of jewelry? The little peg thingy on back I’m assuming is there for a good reason. Wasn’t sure if it was leftover from manufacturing process or functional to final object? Wow such a neat little sword! I would have found it irresistible too.

My wild guess as to its use is toothpick!

At least one of the symbols on the hilt is an anchor with a chain or rope. I can't make out what the other two could possibly be.

    Toothpick, Aye!

A Fouled Anchor is used as a symbol for a US Navy Chief Petty Officer. The iconic fouled anchor was introduced as a cap device in 1905.

Thritto.;) The back isn't decorated, which it would be on a toothpick.
I prefer this cutie to the full size sword.:)

It could have been from a version of the damascene hostess buffet sets...

J Dagger's is handmade and probably silver, not mass produced brass.;)
On Toledo damascene, and faux damascene like the set, you can unscrew various parts, whereas J's sword is one piece.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I wonder if the middle symbol is a monogram.

Okay, I thought that had not been proved. I was confused by other discussions, and by seeing a GAR monogram online that looked somewhat different. Obviously I didn't do the research. The monogram may have changed through time.

Or it is a case of artistic license. It is so small, the wearer wouldn't have noticed.
