box 1.jpg box 2.jpg box 3.jpg box 4.jpg box 5.jpg box 6.jpg Hi everybody, wondering your thoughts on my black lacquered wooden box with a painted genre scene of a mother and children outdoors on top of the lid, mirror on the inside of the lid. Is this a boîte de spa? 18th C.? 19th C.? French? Measures 9.75" L x 7" W x 3.5" H. Appreciate your help!

I am unfamiliar with boîte de Spa, but it does resemble similarly labeled items online. The top painting looks like it's on laid paper, which may help the attribution.

@Peter Jacobs Are you really referring to the 1700s as the age of this box or did you mean the 1800s? (which would be the 19th century.)

The writing on the box in the etsy listing looks like 1886, not 1802... I'd say an 1880's date would fit much better for this type of box, and not early 1800's or 1700's.

The mirror itself doesn't look so very old, in the photo it looks like float glass, but it could easily be a replacement, or addition.

A crisp close-up detail of the picture on top may be in order. It is possible that the one painting was copied many times on similar boxes, but the Etsy listing does say it's a print.

Clearly Victorian. 19th century. And that's a big sister, not a mother. (Her hair is in plaits.) Does look Continental.

Romantic (sentimental) bucolic late Victorian box with a new(ish) mirror in the lid. One of a number of similar copies of a now unknown edition.

Victorian for me too, I always assumed the paintings were just a print ( these boxes are very common in the uk..)

    is this a fold ? pleat.png

I also seem to remember the mirrors were a lot smaller

Thanks all for the comments and invaluable link to the Etsy box. I blacklighted the mirror area and there's traces of modern glue, so the mirror is a modern addition (unless reattached). There's tremendous craquelure on the top, but on close inspection with a loupe, it is an early litho. Appreciate all of your responses!
