Featured Art Deco table identification help

    I've recently been given this coffee table by a family member, it was originally my great grandmother's.

    I've been trying to find out more information about it but haven't had much luck. There's an almost identical one by Alvar Aalto for Artek, but my one has a Bowman Brother's stamp on the bottom. I'm guessing mine is a copy.

    Any info would be appreciated (also value but just for curiosity as I wouldn't sell it)

    Beautiful table, and welcome Alice.
    You would think so, but maybe they were also retailers of other manufacturers' furniture?

    Heavens, that's local! Absolutely a retailer. They were a department store in Camden Town. I'm fairly sure my parents bought stuff there. I'd need to check Kellys to find out when they closed.

    It was and is common for furniture shops and department stores to add their own label or whatever.

    They also had in house designers, some still do, but would outsource the making. And yes, they'd buy in other manufacturer's stuff and label it.

    "1871 Kelly’s Post Office Directory recorded Thomas Bowman at 108, 124 & 126 Camden High Street, as upholsterers. Possibly connected with the firm R. Bowman & Co. recorded at 5 & 6 and 64 & 65 Charlotte Street, Old Street, London as makers of bedroom suites, sideboards and bookcases of ‘thoroughly seasoned wood’ made on the premises under the supervision of Mr Bowman, as mentioned in London Illustrated News in the 1920s."

    Love their building!
    I’d call that table modernist rather than deco, but that’s me. Looks like you’ve got a superb Aalto table Alice!
