Hello all, I am new to this forum.

A few years ago I inherited some of my great grandfather's military things: a few uniform shirts, photos, his dog tags, ribbons, etc. There is one mystery ribbon-

It is the red and blue one with 5 bronze stars on it. No Idea what it is. I had randomly happened across a Felt patch on eBay, listed as "WW2 Original Colour Patch Headquarters, Allied Land Forces, South-West Pacific." (Also Pictured below) which is the same color arrangement. Any searching I did for this turned up nothing.

He started as an Lt in the army, later promoted to captain, and he served in the Pacific for a time, hence the Pacific Forces patch. He was also stationed in Hawaii. Later he ended up in Germany, as far as I'm aware he was there thru the end of the war. He translated and had other duties I cannot recall currently.

I put together this shadow box as a preliminary display before I do something nicer. Below are a few images which will hopefully help.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Even your “temporary shadow box” is a very nice presentation and a touching tribute. :)

    Thank you for the replies!

I'm still learning how to properly utilize the features of this forum, duly noted! thank you. and yes that is the ribbon I am looking at.

That ID card is one of his earlier ones, dated 24 March 1945. Actually that is the earliest of the only two that I have, unfortunately. It is punched with a bunch of small holes which say "INACTIVE." It appears to be just a general Identification card, on the back are some finger prints and a few other bits of info, not much to go off of. My plan is to eventually mount the ID cards in front of a mirror to show the back- the finger prints really are neat.

On the right, it says "United States Army Org Res Corps" above the war office seal. dated 29 Dec 1951. It appears to be the same sort of ID as the other. If you'd like, I can post some closeups of the cards.

The top card was an active duty card, the other was an Army reserves card.

Thanks for clarifying what each one was for- I had always assumed they were one and the same.

It is possible now for people to obtain the war service records of their ancestors.
There may even be records on one or more of the online genealogy sites like Ancestry or FindMyPast. Perhaps if you can track your GGF's record down, it will identify the mystery ribbon. Do you have his service number? [Is that what it is called?]

No help for the USA, but our Ministry of Defence will provide full service records, which is rather good.

Ancestry seems to hold a wide range of American military service records. Do you know someone who has a subscription?

I do, but the level of detail available without adding a Fold3 subscription to the basic Ancestry membership is low. I have not upgraded to that level, so I really don't know whether service awards are included there.
