Help with begin 1900 painting with signature. American artist? What story does it tell?

I recently bought this because I really liked it. I tried to research the artist but need help. I think it's a American artist because of the last name. Could also be a english artist as it was bought in the UK. Guess the first name starts with a N or a M followed by Hoeston.

Would also like to know which story/tale it tells. Any idea's?

Houston, I think.

The scene is from Samson and Delilah, a biblical story, Old Testament. Although Delilah seems to be holding a lock of her own hair, instead of his.

 

I think she cut off his beard instead of his actual hair.
