I like the wine drinker looks like an interesting character. This looks vintage to me. Maybe 1950-60’s? (but really what do I know) It’s 35cm across. Any comments appreciated.Thank you

Very nice find Boland, and on the photos it looks very convincingly 18th century.
How is the metal loop attached?

Hi AJ and thank you for the reply. It’s not a metal loop but a piece of twine (Apologies if my photos weren’t very clear) Did search 174S but didn’t find anything so far.

    It's a date: 1745. Flowers are auricula.

Appreciate the reply and info. The ‘5’ looked like a ‘S’ to me.

    I can understand that: I've seen 18th C S written like this.

Ah, I understand why you asked maybe 1950-60’s, rather than if it was actually 18th century or a replica.
I am used to dates written like that, so I didn't think it could be confusing.:shame:
I'm glad it isn't a metal loop, at first it looked like it was fixed to the pottery. But in the new photos the holes look pretty old to me too.

We don't know when it ended up in South Africa, or who brought it over.
If it came over in the 18th century, it could have been brought by one of many early European settlers.
It reminds me of some 'Lower Rhine' pottery from what is now SE Netherlands, East Belgium and adjoining Germany, but they used red clay.
There were also religious refugees from other parts of Germany, and France and other Continental countries.

Well it’s absolutely amazing and surprising to me that it’s that old (I really didn’t consider that) I can only now imagine the different possible scenarios of how it ended up here (but Iam sure you must be right in one way or other) For interest sake I will do some reading regarding ‘Lower Rhine’ pottery. Thank you again to you and Ownedbybear for your knowledge and great help. Iam really glad I got up early this morning to go to the market!

If it would be dutch i would think more kattekop fles (free translation: cat's head bottle).
Those were highly common in the 18th. Often found in sailers contexts (booze :D ) and in shipwreks.

Can't say if this brings this plate in that century, but it shure looks (that) old.
Nude? Hat? Ain't it some funny interpretation of Bacchus or something? Seen simular guy before, but can't remember where.
