I picked up these at a flea market today. I really love the art nouveau flower design on the large vase.

Strangely enough, the larger one is marked 1919, even though the war ended in 1918. I suppose some troops were still deployed?

The large one has a minor split down the side (doesn't go all the way to the top or bottom). Does this ruin the value?

The large one is inscribed Hirson 1919 and is (9 inches) 23 cm high and 3.5 inches (9 cm) in diameter.
    The bottom is marked:
    Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe
    OKT 1917
    St. 406
    67% CU
SP256 (if there are more letters, I can't see them)

Small one has a brass plaque with St. Quentin and is: 3.9 inches (10 cm) high, and 1.77 inches (4.5 cm) in diameter

    Thanks!
Yeah, that was a typo on my part.
Thanks. So you don't think a soldier made this? (Both or which one?) I bought them from the same person.

The St.Quentin has soldered applique of the city and leaves.Very doubtful a soldier in the trenches could have produced the piece.

Ah, got it. I figured that was the one you meant. Even though it's a factory piece, is it still a good collectible? Does it have any value?

99% of trench art never saw the inside of a trench and was not made by soldiers.

I got £25 (I think) for the pair of these WWI Dusseldorf shells I found in a clearance.

finally someone else dares to say it. :)
especially as both locations are near the border to Belgium. in Belgium itself there were 100s of thousands if not millions of shells in store that served as tourist trophies after the war; the German retreat was so fast in the end that eveything was left behind.

I made some trench art-have mentioned that before. I did acid etching because it was fast and precise. I signed most of my pieces. After I’m dead I’m sure their collectibility will increase. All are signed, dated, and numbered. I used mostly 57mm and 105mm cases, once-fired. Oh some 40mm and 75mm cases too. I found the steel projectiles etch beautifully too so I did one test piece I still have somewhere with both etched brass case and etched steel projectile.
