Lamp01.jpg Lamp02.jpg Lamp03.jpg This lamp has been in my family for about 60 years. My father says this lamp was in a display home his family had moved into in St Louis, MO when he was a child (1950s-1960s). I've not found any other lamp like it and I do not see any obvious manufacturer stamp\markings. I would love to have any information on this lamp.

    Thank you all!

It is a representation of Guanyin, a Buddha avatar, goddess of misericordia.

Thanks, all! The base seems to be a basic metal platform. The lamp itself looks and feels like a porous clay or terra cotta. definitely not wooden. Lamp04.jpg Lamp05.jpg

    huuummmmmm...
that's an off enuf look for me to suggest it's a casting / mold of some sort of resin, or a mix thereof..

Agreed. Looks like a type of composite material but not just resin. Maybe something like stoneware. Looks painted (well to me)

Nice looking piece, even if not very old, it looks Terra cotta to me, with a patina applied.:cyclops:

I want to be clear that I am not looking for super rare antique find here, I am sincerely just curious where\when this lamp came from. Even if it is completely worthless as an antique, it is priceless to my family. So, any info is extremely appreciated. And I want to thank all the info that has been provided! Thank you all!

Well it’s definitely an interesting lamp. Great to have such ‘family’ things. Also other
members might still have some more answers for you.

I agree, a representation of Guanyin, perfectly charming. I also see molded terracotta. She (or he) is made after an older type.

The face is unusual, most Chinese Guanyins have chubby cheeks. This face reminds me of Greek Archaic period faces, but it obviously isn't Greek. I wonder if it is from a Chinese-influenced region, not China.

What I find so interesting is that Guanyin is recognizable even when she looks completely different from other images of her. ??? I knew her instantly, even though I have never seen anything like this image before.

Late 50s-60s seems about right. Despite being Asian in form, I think this is Western in origin. Lots of this type of thing being made in CA during this time period. Looks like some marks in your last pic. Not very legible but maybe you can see them better than we can and/or photograph them better.

Thanks! I agree I wasn't expecting this to be legitimately Asian; an American fad of the time perhaps. My father told me the whole house this came from was furnished with similar Asian decor (Ivory inlay furniture, geisha dolls, etc).
I have some closer pictures here of the markings at the bottom, but they are nothing I can decipher as useful. But, that's why I am here asking the pros. :)
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Lamp06.jpg Lamp07.jpg
