I’ve looked for over a year for the same attitude but can’t find it! I’ve found the one of Hermès but not if her!

Agree - the chip looks decidedly un-bronzelike - at least in the provided pic.

Looks like spelter...or pot metal....I don't know bronze to chip off in that fashion..

But...as I said....we need to really see it before handing down a verdict..

As if we were some kinda court here !!! Heehehehe!!!! :playful::playful::playful:

I used to be in touch with a guy named Charles on eBay who sold Villanais statues and other beautiful art nouveau / Art Deco bronzes. Welcome to our forum, Charles!

    Thanks!:)

Charles, are there several marble plinths or rims? The putti/genii look metal, and the chip is just above them.

I believe that the characters are bronze themselves, inflated into marble some how. I know it’s hard to tell from the pictures but it’s definitely black marble. The Hermès stature had its base cracked in half and you could see it was marble for that one too

I think you are placing too much importance on the appearance of a reproduction of the Mercury on the page with the one other sculpture that has some resemblance to yours. Someone described that Aphrodite, rightly or wrongly, as 'after' Bologna, & the site, which aggregates sale results, picked up on that & posted examples of the Bologna work with it. There is no implication that the original of either Aphrodite was made by Bologna nor that the replica was made by the same manufacturer. In short, I don't think you can rely on anything about how the Mercury repro was made as having any bearing on the construction of yours. They may or may not be the same.

The newer photo that includes the large chip makes it look a bit more like stone than the first one did, but the blurriness is a real handicap in figuring out what we're looking at:

Can you get a photo of her right hand that shows the item she is holding as scissors? Sure looks like a small hand mirror from this angle:

At the auction where I got this statue at, there was the one I had and a Hermes one. Im not sure what reproduction you are referring to. I can absolutely assure you that it is stone and not metal, it is not hard to tell the difference in person. I am mostly wondering if anyone knows the value? I saw a similar one over a year ago that didn't have the base like mine had and it sold for $650 I believe.

Any of the many reproductions of the Bologna Mercury on the market.

There is not much chance of making a reasonable estimate of value without knowing what it is.

It has certainly been knocked around a bit. I'm particularly curious about the chipped toes on the putto. If bronze, then cast in a mold taken from a work that was already chipped. Otherwise, very odd type of damage for metal.

The photo is out of focus and not magnified enough to see what's going on with the toes.

I think the circled toes just look a bit either crushed or ‘mashed’........IMHO:rolleyes::rolleyes:
