Featured Help! Identifying Antique try Desk

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Safe Haven Collectibles, Feb 10, 2019.

  1. Hello,

I am new to the the forum and need some help to identify a desk that was passed down from my mothers side. My wife and I believe it is English, maybe a ladies writing desk? My mother’s parents were stationed in Germany when they picked it up and brought it back to the states. We were told that the desk was an antique when they purchased it. It has an Italian Marble top with green felt underneath. We found a signature and mark that is included in the photos. Any information is appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Aaron

Welcome, Aaron. Just making it easier for the people who know furniture. My inexpert opinion is that the marble is not part of the original plan. Wondered if the shape next to the name could be the outline of a U.S. state. It's something like North Carolina, but not quite. First name looks like 'Tim' to me.

Or Jim, which was actually my first reaction. Both very English language names. Can you think of anything that might start with F or Fr that would fit? Frantz doesn't make it.

See INH has brought that eagle eye to bear on the matter. :)

It looks Dutch to me. But that's just my first thought with those designs.

Can you get a picture of the dove tails on it please? That could be really helpful.

Any manufacturers name on hardware would be useful, if there is any.

So not a tulip, what flower is that?

  12. On another look, here is a mark we completely missed next to the dovetails.

German Jugendstil, probably made in the countryside.

sorry for crossing. Augsburg is in Bavaria, so yes it's a bit "retarded" and may have been made up till the 1920s when the height of Jugendstil was already over. nice town though, with many nice Biergärten and good Krustenschinken etc.

Someone on the Hindenburgstrasse in Augsburg. Don't know if 'Aug' would be for Augustus or Augsburg. What are the 2nd & 3rd letters of next word: B__meister?

probably Baumeister, Aug. is for August or in Bavaria Guschtl.
