This is another painting my friend found at the thrift store today & sold to me (for $10 + thrift store cost OF $9.99) - unlike the carving & dragon(?) paperweight I posted earlier I bought from him that he had in in his car -.
The name doesn't make sense - Pail Gan? But the work looks really nice.
Another thing - it has the same label as the John Emms painting; whoever donated them must have bought them at the same time while at that antique painting shop - which also makes me hopeful it's also by a known, listed artist?
Does anyone know the artist's name?
Once again, thank you guys for your help (last one today I promise!)

My initial twitch is that the monogram is the signature and the other text is a title/descriptor of some sort... not that I've yet made sense of it.

I wonder whether the Pail Gan (or whatever it is) is not the artist. The monogram above it - HBF, HBT?

Both the painting and frame appear to be later than 1908 in style. Odd that.

Isn’t it odd to give a day of the month on a painting?

Caveat: I'm on my phone, so it's not the best viewing...

For me, it's got this weird "paint by numbers" vibe going on. That's not to say it's not a masterpiece by some listed artist, that's just my first impression... which sounds way more derogatory than I intend. :bucktooth:

This is a company that sold decorational paintings back in the day for people's home. More decorational than anything. Artist will most likely be unknown

Also this isn't really well done. The rocks lack detail along with river water. Very amateur look to it. Lacks a lot of detail

Where did you get the info on the company?

The sticker on the back is a dead giveaway! Anytime you see a sticker on the back that has a company name and says "sells paintings, prints, frames, art shop" that automatically is stating it was a company that sold decorative paintings to people back in the day for their homes. The painting in the OP is nothing more than that . It's decorative. I found nothing on the company but know it's decorative art.

I know about decorative arts frame shops, but THEY ALSO FRAME PAINTINGS.

And that is what I am basing my opinion on - the paintings. Deborah already commented that the frames look to be circa 1970s and I agree with her assessment. But I do believe both paintings are older than that.

I think it's well done, NOT "highway art" and I don't care that the rocks look a bit flat, you are right about that Rink28. The water splashing on them isn't flat. Are the rocks the only thing you question about the "well doneness" appearance of this painting?

No, not really. It's up to the artist, there is no formal protocol.

Looks like the initials above are the artist's initials. Pail Gan or Gam is the location. The water hitting the rocks does not look well done.

Over the holidays, I had a piece framed at Michael's (big USA craft store chain that subs out their frame shop).

They also put a sticker on the back. I hope the only thing people judge by that sticker is the frame job. :joyful:

I don't think it is Pail Gam.
I think it is Tail Gam or Gom
