This is one of the strangest tapestries I have even seen . Has handwoven holes, different woven types etc. It measures 62" x 68" and ends folded over and sewn .

Anyone know anything about this ?

    Thank You

Maybe the holes are so cords could be woven through them to enable it to be easily gathered for some reason?

I'm having trouble seeing what I'm seeing... are these two separate types of strips sewn together? (see below)

And on the back of white strip (below with the yellow squiggles)... I'm not seeing any needlework -- is it a double layer of fabric?

I'm thinking Nigerian (specifically Yoruban), but I may be overly influence by just a couple of samples with some pattern similarities... not really an area I know.

Of course, if it's not really strips, back to the drawing board. :hilarious:

I'm staying with my original, the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The proper search term seems to be OJAWU ASO-OKE. Aso-oke is the general term for the Yoruba hand woven cloth and Ojawu (O'jawu) seems to be the specification for the cloth with the woven holes.

(Just realized that @2manybooks second image is Yoruba and has the holes... I had missed that... :bucktooth::p )

I am usually as dense as the order would suggest. :hilarious:

Interesting. I've been trying to find a picture online demonstrating how the holes in the fabric would be used to make the garment. Has anybody found one of those?

So maybe the holes are for ventilation in clothing worn in a hot climate? (Apologies if this was already said and I missed it!)

I suspect the holes are simply a decorative style, rather than serving any particular function.

Could be, though it seems to me that often the original reason why a trend or style came about becomes lost.
