chinese tray 1.jpg peacock mark.jpg Hi everyone, I just found this forum.

I have recently started collecting vintage things, mainly pewter. I saw this tray in a second hand shop and was confused at the hallmark-peacock with Arabic writing.

I presume it was export for the Middle East? Does anyone know how old it is?

    Many thanks.

    Welcome, Castelli.
It looks like Japanese writing to me, not horizontal but vertical.:)
It looks pretty recent, maybe late 20th century. But let's wait for the others.

    Hi Castelli!

    Welcome to Antiquers!

If you edit your post, you can change your thumbnail photos to Full Image.

The tray appears fairly new to me, but wait for others.

I would have thought newer as well just from the photos. Not sure we have anyone on the forum that can translate Arabic, but fairly confident 20-30 years old at most. Would be a pretty tray for tea, etc. :)

It looks like we need someone who can translate Japanese, not Arabic.;)

Thanks Phaik Hooi, I can see it now.:)
The Iranians still make images of animals and people, that has never ceased. They are very proud of their heritage. Here is a 2012 video of an Isfahan miniature painter painting a tiny portrait of an Iranian poet:

If you watch closely, you can also see portraits on the wall.

They continued all through the revolution.:) The streets of Teheran and other cities were then, as now, lined with huge portraits of Khomeini, etc.
Strict Sunni acuse the Shia of idolatry, because they are not that strict about portraying people. Iran is mostly Shia.
