    This stands 2 3/4" tall, the base is 2 1/4". I assume it's an incense holder...and I assume it's Chinese?

Cleaned it up and took more pics. I might have to see if someone local knows for sure

Looks like soapstone to me (basically solidified talcum powder).

Simple test... drag your fingernail or the edge of a butter knife across the bottom of the base.If it is soapstone it will scratch the surface or turn to powder.

Yeah. Soapstone is REALLY soft. You can almost carve into it with your fingernails. That's why it's used for making things like Chinese seals, because they're just so easy to carve.

I guess soapstone isn't that bad. Looks cool though. Thanks everyone!

You're right. The censer was made in India, with a central Om or Aum mantra symbol on a lotus base. Classic Hindu, and also very popular with New Age people.

Om signifies the sound of primordial spiritual consciousness, the start of everything in spiritual and physical creation. That is why it is considered the most sacred of sounds. Having an Om symbol on a censer gives extra meaning to burning incense.
The lotus is the Asian symbol of spiritual growth and purity.
