I thought maybe the enameled ‘CI’ might have been added from something else. The bowl is monogrammed F.E.B. Any thoughts if the enameled portion is original? Thanks for looking.

How did you find my father's baby spoon (the correct initials)?

Not that I know much about old spoons but it looks original to me.

I'm with wiscbirddog, looks original to me too:) Maybe the CI is an organization/group that FEB belonged to?

Thank you for the reply, I’ve been searching for this logo with no luck. :( But, it’s not terribly important, just nagging at me.

My best guess is that it's for/from a college that starts with an "I". (I don't think it's Ithaca, since their school color isn't RED, but I think it belongs to some other college whose color IS red!)

if its not original the enamel is very unlikely to be set in sterling? maybe try running a magnet or something over the CI bit. Just a guess.

Iona College uses red and white these days. That could also be Chicago Illinois. Or University of Illinois. Or....

Wayne was kind enough to reply:

I am not sure. I suspect it is a Christian symbol similar to the Christian Endeavor spoon found on this page
    http://spoonplanet.com/baptism.html

But it could also be a university or private organization etc.

    good luck

Doesn't look safe to give to a baby, so I agree some kind of souvenir spoon.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The enameled letters on the spoon look familiar -- now I'll be thinking about it ... hoping the memory comes to the surface.

About whether the enameled portion is original to the spoon or not, I wonder whether @DragonflyWink has any thoughts on that?

It's a souvenir spoon, probably from around 1900-10, and the applied enamel piece is almost certainly original despite not being a particularly good fit. Rather than design different spoons requiring the costly step of cutting separate dies, the manufacturers would just add to a generic design and local jewelers would stock them for schools, social organizations, clubs, towns, etc. This may the same spoon that I have with what I believe is a blue Wellesley 'W', but unfortunately it's not handy to check - Shepard made a great figural graduate holding applied school pennants, but this is not likely to be Shepard. Might even be Canadian, it was very common technique in their souvenir spoons, for some reason Breadner is coming to mind for the spoon blank, but that's just a thought...

Sorry, that's all I've got, can't help with identification of the 'IC' or 'CI'.

    ~Cheryl

Arghhh - edited 'Shepherd' to the correct 'Shepard' (I know better, sinus infection making me stupid and cranky...)
