I just came across some really nice pieces of hand-carved vintage 1950s Hong Kong furniture.

One is what I believe to be a credenza. I do not know what its true purpose was since the internal compartments are made for a specific purpose. I do not know if the figurines are ivory or stone but they look amazing. This particular credenza is branded as Majestic CO. Manufacturers & Exporters Art Carved Chest & Furniture. (Measurements: 36" height x 38" width x 18 inches deep.)

The other piece is a 1950s Asian Style Ebonized Hand Crafted, Hand Painted Room Divider Screen with brass capped feet. One side is depicting a courtyard scene the other side depicts different flowers. (Panels Measurements: 6 feet height x 16" width.)

Both pieces are in good condition taking into account their age and use.

I do not know where to have them appraised or if it would be worth it to have them restored. I would appreciate greatly your expert comments and advice.

    Regards,
    Edward

The one you call a credenza appears to be a bar cabinet.
    I love it!

LOL I love it too... In-person is truly striking. What kind of bottles and glassware go with it? Maybe you know... Also, I do not know the material of the figurines or what metal exactly the other parts are made of. Amazing community guys.

BTW, I think this style is called "Chinoiserie". (I'm not very knowledgeable about furniture styles, I just know some general stuff.) Google "Chinoiserie bar cabinet" and you'll see lots of similar examples.
You would insert upside-down stemware, ie: wine glasses, into the slotted holes.
The round holes would hold bottles.
You've also got shelves for tumblers, etc.

Thank you so much for the reply, I will definitely check it out. Is it worth it to restore them or do I leave them in their current state? Also if you know an online reputable appraisal service I would greatly appreciate it.

Just wanted to give you guys a close-up of the detailed craftsmanship the bar cabinet has... It would be great to know if that is stone, resin or if it is ivory. I do not have a clue.

I don't know maybe polish the metals and bring back the shine in the black paint. Then again I do not know. If you guys say don't touch it I won't touch it. I think it looks great like that.

Personally I would leave the cabinet alone.

Thank you so much for the awesome reply you rock... What a nice Sunday lol. I totally forgot to upload the metal tag the Bar Cabinet has so here it is. Also, I found a secret compartment but it was empty. Why would a Bar Cabinet have a secret compartment? So cool... Cheers

Well, it was an entire drawer hidden from view that slides out. It has specific shape holes for what I can only assume is glassware or maybe drink ingredients now that I know it was a bar.

interesting...I'll gamble it had glass inserts or metal ones .....that one only needed to touch, to know the contents......

but I'm just guessing by the way the cutouts are formed..

That bar's really impressive-just can't find much about the Majestic Co.,Hong Kong.Seems strange since this is such a fine piece of work-but I might have used the wrong search terms.
-Hollywood Regency Chinese ? This could be a case for Detective Roaring.

I found a similar one thanks to all of the forum's information but still would love to know more. Extremely intrigued by the piece. I went back to get some really nice Asian-theme paintings circa 1920. They were together with the bar. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/s...tones-precious-materials-1950s/id-f_10433113/

Chinoiserie is European, or other Western, made in the Chinese style.:) This is proper Chinese.
Your photos are great, but it is impossible to say. Could you post a photo of a detail, for instance a face?
The makers went for an ivory look, so not stone. I have seen many of the period that have celluloid figures.

Majestic was a well known furniture company in Kowloon. The owners were from Shanghai, like many Hongkong furniture manufacturers.
Here is some background info on the Shanghai furniture makers that moved to Hongkong:
    https://industrialhistoryhk.org/sha...f-the-wooden-furniture-industry-in-hong-kong/

It is impossible to get a good look at the materials of the figures on the cabinet bar on 1st dibs, but they are multi-coloured and there is mention of stone, suggesting serpentine parts. Your figures are one monochrome material, with a little colour in folds and crevices.
"And precious materials" is often a euphemism for ivory, which can't be sold legally in most parts of the world.;) Not sure if there is any ivory on that drinks cabinet though.
