i say he's a Tyrolian hunter who's asleep on the edge of a mountain cliff, with an angel looking out for him....lest he roll over and fall to his death..!
the eagle is there to show how high up he is in the mountains.....

One helluva sexy angel! Wrong wings. Those butterfly wings are conventional for nymphs. There are echoes here of all the times in classical mythology the goddesses likely to see people when they're sleeping, Aurora/Eos, goddess of the dawn, and Diana/Artemis, as goddess of the moon, fell in love with some good looking shepherd or hunter (Orion, Endymion).

By the bye, where are the bolts for the bow?

 

I agree with Komo .. my first thought was young man asleep, with a guardian angel watching over him ... Joy.

 

Oh, got it -- it was one of those where I was seeing concave when it was meant to be convex.

Spirit of the Alps by German artist Konrad Wilhelm Dielitz (1845 - 1933) is based on a Tyrolean legend set in the Bavarian Alps. Her anger at finding him intruding upon her domain fades away when she sees how young and handsome he is, and she picks an edelweiss flower, which grows in the most inaccessible mountain regions,and places it in his hand as a protective talisman.

Sorry, I didn't post enough. The place where I snagged the pic had all the info, but I found the similarity between the top maiden and the fairy disconcerting and wondered about one artist copying another.

Which does not appear to be the case... more one artist copying himself.
