Featured Two books of military badges, armbands etc

I came across two books of military cloth badges and armbands and other bits and pieces while clearing out my parents home. I'm so tired at the moment that I don't have the energy to google search, but instead wondered if anyone here could advise me, please? I have very little knowledge about this kind of thing. I suppose I'm wondering what value they might have (if any), and what to do with them? I don't think they belonged in the family, but were passed to my parents by a friend of theirs.

The smaller (red) book has pages and pages of cloth badges, all described; the book is dated in the front as 1943. There seems to be a particular emphasis on Canada.

The larger book contains no written descriptions, but does have a bunch of cloth armbands.

Any thoughts? Thanks for looking .

 

Many thanks of the info. When I'm less tired I'll do some research into HMS Keppel. I'd ask my dad where he got them from but don't want to remind him of home at the moment (tricky situation!).

It occurred to me that they might be samples of some kind? The descriptions are pretty detailed! Or would that be the kind of knowledge a collector would have?

I'm happy to know they'd be worth taking to auction. Thanks again!

Agree, the collection has significant value, probably would do best with Canadian customers. I'd bet there are some very scarce items in it, and they appear to be in newish condition.

 

Now that there is how to collect....and document stuff !!!

Show em to your dad......I don't think they'll remind him of home....I think they'll remind him of his youth !

& be prepared to hear some old stories...

 

Thanks for your comments . They were tucked away in a cupboard and I'm not sure dad would like the idea of me going through everything (he's in denial about having to move, due to his care needs). If I get the opportunity I will mention them; but it could be they'll have to go to auction anyway. Good to know they'll generate some interest. I'll take care of them for now.

 

If you decide to sell it yourself let me know, also if going to a live auction make sure it is a place where I can bid via phone. I like them .

I'm resurrecting this thread in the hopes of some advice.... I took these albums along to the Antiques Roadshow last year and they ended up being more collectible & valuable than I'd imagined: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p073jmtk

I should have taken more notice of the original advice on here but as I said at the time, I was SO tired. Too tired to think straight. And the albums sat on the shelf next to me until last August when I took them on a whim to the Roadshow in Media City, Salford, for a much needed day out. I never expected to be filmed - or I'd have had my hair done, haha!!!

Anyway, I'm in a quandary about what to do. We're not in a position to sell them (and certainly wouldn't want them split up). It has been suggested to me that a reference book of some kind would be useful to collectors, but I have no idea how to go about that. I've had an offer for magazine publication, which we're considering. Help! I have no idea how big the collector's market is... how the badges would best be presented etc. It'd be nice to make a little income from them while keeping the originals. Anything to help with care home fees!

Quick note: there are about 400 badges in total, not 1000 as stated in the programme, but some are very rare.

 

First off, it's good to see you here, and to actually see a member of this forum appear on the Antiques Roadshow is a new experience! I'm glad that the video is not blocked from viewing in the US.

I think if you do a magazine publication you might receive book offers that you could consider. Or you might research publishers to find who would be the best at such things.

I hope somebody else here will have more informed advice.

So....figure out how much work you want to put into this venture.....& go from there.

No work....sell it
Lots o' work....full color photo's and descriptions....with added commentary & historic photo's where possible , culminating in a published guide !!

Fig, you're right. A magazine publication wouldn't exclude a later (more comprehensive) book. Stupidly, I hadn't thought about it like that!

Thanks - I've tried to share the experience with dad but he really can't understand anymore...

It's been a nerve-wracking but exciting experience that has taken me wayyyy out of my comfort zone!
