Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I know there's a way a frame like that can sometimes be salvaged....I haven't done it, but read about it.....

I think this might be about the same as Jivvy's...tough to get that lettering to show up intelligibly....... Z 888 95small LOWER-1.jpg

I think it says "Scene in Colorado" what is after is probably scratches in the wood :cyclops:

That's what I think it says too.

    To clarify:

The first three photos I posted are of the top of the frame - 1 photo of the whole section, then 2 smaller photos of each section so perhaps you can read it.

The fourth photo - in a separate post, is a photo of the bottom of the frame, with Scene in Colorado written on it

I think the last name might be Moore - maybe I over cropped that section - let me go see if I can salvage any of this mess.

Nope - that was done by the camera.

Thanks for sticking with me people - maybe I'll get some better photos today.

Oh - I took it out of the frame but saw no signature - of course maybe any writing is covered in grime.

Meanwhile, I better start saving up the old saliva, huh? Can anyone direct me to the conversation we had recently abut cleaning up old paintings? I think Greg swears by only using saliva, but others suggested it was okay to use something else?

Could you take pictures of the lower right and lower left corners anyway? It's possible a sig could be teased out of the grime.

What age are people thinking? Late 19th century? Something else? (or, more properly, what age are people thinking the frame is?)

There is a patent date of 1851 on the label on the back of the board. I realize it could have been done any time after that.

It's an amateur painting. It has it's charm, but it's no undiscovered masterpiece. You want to be careful cleaning it: sometimes paintings like these seem to benefit from the mellowing effects of time and a bit of grime.

    Hi
I only recommend the salvia since it was taught to me by the MET in NYC. They say anything that might contain water is a NONO. Since it may soak to the gesso layer and later months or years it will crack and pieces will fall off. I have used salvia for years now and never had a problem.

Okay - here is a photo of it out of the frame, and four photos along the bottom edge.
I must say, it looks grimier and grosser every time I look at it, and to think I liked it at first.... :(

You might try William Lemos, he had a booth at the Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk, born in 1861 and passed away in 1942: Many of his paintings are in big gold frames and unsigned. He also had a son who was an artist. I have one of his paintings that is a forest fire . He was blind / almost blind ? by the time he passed away , so his quality of paintings changed in his later life . He is a listed California artist, his wife Mabel also painted I believe . He was born in New York.....
