**Damaged Frame

*Damaged=huge understatement here!!
It’s fairly large, outer dimensions 32” x 29”.
I’m thinking I should give this away to somebody building a haunted house or who wants to repurpose it for something else.
What do y’all think?

So next week we'll have a newby with a question: I found this beautiful antique frame on the curb. How much would it cost to have it restored? How much money would I make ($$$$!!) once it is restored?

Good Grief! Ye of little faith!!

First, knock off all the loose bits. Then clean frame with soap and hot water. Put it flat on a table and let it dry thoroughly. (Thoroughly!)

Then brush frame with white, chalky paint and add a Childe Hassam (or Monet, etc) print.

There! See!!!

Oh God, I am itching to get my fingers on that frame. I have had even worse ones than that and restored them to being useful. I have picked up worst ones than that one after a flea market closed down. It is a shame that most of my before and after photos were messed up after a PC crash. Now I am starting to do regular photos of some of my work.

I used to know a framer, whom I considered one of the BEST. I handed him a damaged frame once, and I told him I wanted it shaved -- and he knew exactly what I meant, and how to do it. Still looks fabulous!

 

What you maybe can’t see from the photos is how bad this frame is warped. I know that when it comes to wood just about anything can be fixed but steaming and jigging is beyond my patience and skill level.

 

HOT water & heavy books on top; dry thoroughly. Or, you could send it to me...

"Fussy stuff" is repaired by museums - but the key is simple - modeling clay and plaster.

First of all - use modeling clay to make an impression of a goodly section of the "fussy stuff."

Then make the other half of your mold by making a positive impression of the damaged stuff. The space between the two molds is what you want to fill with the plaster goop.

Use plaster goop to make the resultant "repair" segments (absolute perfection is not required, by the way, as you can add small bits of plaster by hand later).

Put the "fixes" in place - gluing (well -- you do need the stuff to dry first). Then use the "best match" coloring you can and you are done ("gilding paint" if that is what you need.

The result does not need to be perfect - only enough to not yell at the viewer. Remember that on old frames, the "fussy stuff" was plaster in the first place.

I have even heard of "freehand" repairs using spackling compound!

This frame is toast.....if it were an animal.....I'd put it down...to relieve it's suffering !!

With 8 Billion frames out there......this one has seen it's day.....had a long life , and now deserves a final resting place !!!
