Was wondering if anyone could give me whatever information on This needlepoint firescreen. Estimated value, age I would guess is late 1800’s European origin. Thank you guys! Considering buying it but have little knowledge on firescreens. Collector paid $1200 for it and is offering to give it to me at $400 as he had a horrible hoarding situation and just wants everything gone completely.

    Not sure I could live with subject matter. Appears to be Robinson Crusoe and Friday.

    Very different! I'd say 1860s-70s. Worth it for, maybe, $300. May be you can talk him down.

    Do you all think that frame is old?
    I get a newer vibe from it.
    @verybrad

    Any chance you can get a close up of the stitching?

    Good observations, I don’t have any other pics and do not own it. Had no clue what the needlepoint depicted, but there is no doubt in my mind this is not a recent reproduction. If that were the case I would think early 1900’s. The tapestry could be a repro and added later to the fire screen, to my best knowledge but I would not think the firescreen itself is younger than 1920.

    Have no idea if this would have ever been worth $1200.

    In today's market $400 seems awfully high to me. But I'm not a needlework person.

    Do you like it $400 worth if it turns out not to be as old as he claims?
    I'm a tightwad. I would not spend a lot of money on something I wasn't sure about, unless I was madly in love with it and didn't care what it cost.

    I came here to inquire price, accuracy of age, authenticity etc to help make a decision on purchase. I have purchased a large amount of his items that are no doubt exactly what he’s told me they are. I am also in a market in Dallas- Fort Worth that antiques are priced a lot higher. The market here is way different due to population/ income I am guessing.

    Are you interested in buying for resale or is this something you plan on enjoying in your own home?

    Have no problem assigning a late 19th century date to this. I can not speak to the tapestry being period to the frame. Based on the quality, I could easily see this going for $400.00 in the right auction or at retail. I could also see getting similar for less given the right circumstances.

    Here are completed auctions for Victorian fire screens. Many nice ones sold for considerably less than $400.00. A few did considerably better.

    & I came here to join in a community of like minded lovers of antiques, offering their time and expertise & opinions on a wide variety of items in order to help each other figure out exactly what it is they have.
    So , what's your point?

    I have purchased a large amount of his items that are no doubt exactly what he’s told me they are.
    Well now there is doubt, just by virtue of you being here to ask ' whatever information' you can glean from us to validate what you've been told by a seller who wants to rid himself of his stock......at a substantial loss.

    in Dallas- Fort Worth that antiques are priced a lot higher. ...

    Members here come from all over North America & the world. There are many who live up the side of a mountain , in small communities , out in the back woods, & in the heart of big cities.
    Thus, we are reluctant to place firm values on items because of the very nature of their volatile market fluctuations.
    That said....at $1200...even if your dealer is honest.......he may have wildly overpaid ..... for a number of reasons....or cuz he screwed the pooch !

    I have no prior experience or knowledge with firescreens which is why I asked. Alls he could tell me is that it was a 19th century needlepoint bought years ago for $1200. Would not be surprised if he overpaid as we are in a market where most of the stuff you guys post can get next to nothing is still selling for top dollar.

    Right there , you said a mouthful !!!

    Talk about business opportunity.... if you can source these items in places where their value is depressed....& bring them into your market....you can stop buying from your dealer.....& become a dealer yourself !!!

    Oh...& Go Cowboys !!!! :woot::woot::woot:
