    Hi folks,
Can the collective wisdom help me identify these rattles?

They do say "Cuba." And the one appears to feature the image of a cruise ship. Important to remember that, while Americans have long been prohibited from visiting, Cuba is a popular holiday destination for citizens of other countries.

They look pretty old, so could date to earlier 50s, when Americans still went freely.

Certainly likely (but Cuba is so poor, perhaps everything there looks old.) Here's some cruise ships for comparison.

Thanks for the replies so far. Cuba is carved into each maraca. I Believe my father acquired these in the 50s. I remember them having a prominent spot on the coffee table when I was a kid in the early 70s. They resurfaced today as I am cleaning out my dads house.

Well, there you go. But -- curious -- why did you post them here if you knew what they were?

Easy, everyone. No hidden intent on my part.

I don’t know their origin. My family never traveled to Cuba. My dad’s people are all Danes who settled in Detroit and my mom’s are all Germans who made their way in Nebraska. So I am trying to find out if these maracas are genuinely from Cuba.

My apologies if I failed to frame the inquiry properly. For future reference, does the folks in this forum prefer additional information even if it’s validity is uncertain?

Thanks for helping this first time poster learn the ropes,

No problem, Eric, and welcome. FYI, as a courtesy, we do appreciate all information that is available even if it's incomplete, supposition or rumor.

Cuba is wildly popular as a holiday destination for Brits. I'd love to get out there.

As Debora said, yes. Just include how you know the things you are certain about & clearly indicate what is just speculative. We tend to get annoyed if someone posts an item professing to know nothing, then tells us they already knew what we spent time researching to find out.

I see no reason to think the maracas did not originate in Cuba. It's one of those cases of Why would anyone bother to fake them? Maybe a family friend brought them back as a souvenir gift? Or maybe once upon a time someone wanted a pair of maracas & found these somewhere? Think your bigger mystery is how/why they came into your family, not where they first came from.
