McAvoy? Johnson? (just guessing based on your location).

Many states have state archaeologists. Depending on where you are you could start there with an email and a photo.

I have some familiarity with some NA pottery but it varies so much by location and peoples. It doesn't look like those I have a bit of knowledge of.....actually the ridges remind me of some old Dutch pots but I won't claim to know what your's is.

Michael F Johnson. Good guess, because honestly I had to go back to my emails to refresh my recollection it was that long ago.

To OP... that's another option: a COUNTY sponsored archeologist (e.g., Johnson)

Not too much of a guess, I've volunteered with Mike many times. I'm guessing you heard a lot about Cactus Hill ;) and probably Gault.

I met Mike when I was doing a Virginia program for volunteers that welcomes anyone interested in archaeology. It covers a lot of ground and requires many hours of volunteer work in different areas. I'd been doing mostly historic archaeology and met Mike when I started on pre-historic.

Since you live close, if you're interested in the program you can find more about it here. It's the Certification Program for Archaeological Technicians sponsored by the state office of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the professional archaeology association Council of Virginia Archaeologists and the Virginia Archeological Society which is open to anyone. It usually takes most people a few years to get all the hours, reading, classes and tests done.
