Lovely thing, Maria! There seem to be marks on the inside of the watch case (have you already researched those?) Can we see the silver box without the watch inside?

  3. Some markings i can just make out are 0,800, also 3700 and the fancy monogram A & C. I have not researched them. IMG_0250.jpg IMG_0251.jpg IMG_0252.jpg Hope that helps.

Two appear to say 800 inside an oval cartouche. Italy, maybe?

After typed that OP put up new pix & reading:
So, 800 silver, but where do they indicate it as the fraction 0.800?

Words on the movement are just instructions for which direction to turn to regulate the speed.

.800 silver is most often European or South American and the key to determining which will be seeing closer views of the teeny tiny punches above and below the 800 on the right side of the last picture Maria posted.

The watch itself bears Avance and Retard, French for "advance" (meaning speed up) and "retard" (meaning slow down.) I would guess a Swiss made movement. The case might also have been made there, and silver marks are compulsory on Swiss-made watch cases.

It is a run of the mill Swiss 15 jewel lever escapement watch from about 1900 -1920 probably for export. The movement is of standard design and average quality. The box could be from any European silver making country, there may be tiny hallmarks hidden in the design. It could be Swiss and original to the watch.

There's a little bit more coming out of the crown than the dragon's head & neck. Wing? Shield?

Certainly conceivable. I find the way the design has been made on the watch case interesting. The inside & areas of the outside look engine turned? Don't know what this may mean for dating.

Here's an outer case/box with engine turned decoration:

Is this style of watch called a half hunter?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Would this help a wee tad??? Almost looks like "it's" holding two knives!

    Pretty set, Maria.:)
    I think so.
    Giraffe? Camel? Nessie?
All I can find is this kind of thing, and no Nessie:

  14. Thank you all. It is a pretty set and yet another relic from the old family farmhouse in Kent, England. I have more coming......

The arrmorial looks quite normal and the exact design of the coronet signifies the rank of the owner. No time now to look for it.

  16. I found these hallmarks on the silver case: Chester markings circa 1900. Jeez - I am loving this research stuff! Also, the dragon armorial sitting on the crown has fire coming from its mouth.
